Delgermurun Watershed Plan

The Delger River (Delgermurun) originates in the mountains of the Ulaan Taiga Strictly Protected Area as a wild and pristine river. It then flows near the soum center of Bayanzurkh, passes by Murun and joins the Ider River to form the Selenge River which flows into Lake Baikal. The watershed supports human uses from sport fishing and floating tourism to grazing, farming, mining and urban uses, with subsequent degradation of water quality and potential species loss.

In 2021, the Delgermurun-Shishkhed River Basin Administration is tasked with updating the 5-year Integrated Water Resources Management Plan for the Delger River watershed. Matt McKinney (Co-director, Center for Natural Resources & Environmental Policy at the University of Montana) and Cliff Montagne are providing guidance through frequent communications with colleague Erdene Dorjsuren and his organization in Mongolia (Green Focus Facilitator NGO). BioRegions is providing funding to a contractor to conduct workshops in the field, as well as to the local river basin authority to conduct field work.
